GEOLOGIST’S ROOM

The “Geologist’s Room” exhibition is dedicated to the history of geological research in the vicinity of Horishni Plavni and to the people whose work laid the foundation for the development of the city’s mining and metallurgical industries.

About the Exposition

The exhibition immerses visitors in the work and daily life of geologists who actively explored the region’s geological resources from the late 19th century onward. Their research led to the discovery of the Kremenchuk Magnetic Anomaly, vast iron ore deposits, and, in turn, the creation of a major industrial center and the beginning of the development of the city of Horishni Plavni. A distinctive feature of the exhibition is the reconstruction of the working and living environment of a geologist from the second half of the 20th century. Visitors can explore the interior of a scientist’s room furnished with period furniture, personal belongings, work tools, and scientific instruments typical of the era. Among the exhibits are original items that witnessed the birth of a new city: rock and mineral specimens, geological maps, laboratory equipment, a typewriter, a mechanical calculator, a radio receiver, other scientific instruments, specialized literature, everyday belongings of the city's pioneers, and kitchen utensils. A highlight of the exhibition is the personal raincoat of P. F. Shpak, Minister of Geology of the Ukrainian SSR (1967–1982). The “Geologist’s Room” is intended not only to introduce visitors to the scientific discoveries and the history of industrial development in Horishni Plavni, but also to reveal the human side of the geologist’s profession—their daily work, curiosity, perseverance, and dedication to exploring the Earth's interior. This exhibition offers a deeper understanding of how geological research shaped the foundation and development of the city and the entire region.
