ABOUT THE MUSEUM

History, Timeline, and Photo Gallery of the Local History Museum of Horishni Plavni.

HISTORY OF THE MUSEUM

The history of museum activities in Horishni Plavni, Poltava Region, dates back to the 1960s, when Kostiantyn Volynchuk, the first principal of the School for Working Youth, called for the establishment of a local museum center. By the late 1980s, the number of museum institutions in the city had increased. The Museum of the 252nd Rifle Division was opened at Vocational School No. 15, and a local history museum was established at the Komsomolsk Mining and Metallurgical Technical School. In February 1990, the Museum of the Poltava Mining and Processing Plant (PGOK) began operating in the premises of the Personnel Training Department. Although the museum's profile did not allow for a comprehensive presentation of the history of the region and the city, local history materials continued to accumulate and required promotion among the public. This became the foundation for the creation of a local historical and regional studies museum. In 2000, the City Historical and Local History Museum and the Museum of the History of the Poltava Mining and Processing Plant were united under one roof, making it possible to preserve and present the history of the city and the region from ancient times to the present day. Today, the museum is housed in two separate buildings, where exhibitions focus on local history, ethnography, and archaeology. Special attention is given to the events of the twentieth-century world wars and the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War. The museum also operates a permanent exhibition hall that hosts a variety of temporary exhibitions, primarily devoted to art. In addition, the museum oversees branch departments in the villages of Dmytrivka and Soloshyne. The museum's collection comprises approximately 35,000 items. It includes natural history, geological, and paleontological specimens dating back up to 4 billion years, archaeological artifacts ranging from Middle Stone Age and Neolithic flint tools to medieval objects and materials related to the Cossacks of the Zaporizhian Host on both banks of the Dnipro River, an ethnographic collection of local household items, and objects of modern history, including materials associated with the Russo-Ukrainian War.
